How Shopify Fees Actually Work

Shopify charges three things on every sale:

  1. A monthly subscription ($5 Starter, $29 Basic, $79 Grow, $299 Advanced, or custom Plus pricing).
  2. A credit card processing fee on every transaction, ranging from 2.5% to 2.9% + 30¢ depending on your plan.
  3. An extra transaction fee (only if you use a third-party gateway like PayPal or Stripe instead of Shopify Payments), ranging from 0.6% to 2% on top of your gateway's own fees.

The first two apply to every store. The third is optional and only kicks in if you deliberately route payments outside Shopify Payments. For 99% of stores, enabling Shopify Payments is the right call.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is this Shopify fee calculator?
The calculator uses the exact 2026 plan prices and processing fees published by Shopify: Basic at $29/month (2.9% + 30¢), Grow at $79/month (2.7% + 30¢), and Advanced at $299/month (2.5% + 30¢). These are the same rates Shopify bills against every sale. The only fees not included are optional app subscriptions, premium themes, and currency conversion on international sales.
What does Shopify take per sale in 2026?
On Shopify Payments, Shopify takes 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic, 2.7% + 30¢ on Grow, or 2.5% + 30¢ on Advanced for online sales. If you use a third-party gateway like PayPal or Stripe, Shopify charges an extra 2% / 1% / 0.6% on top of your gateway's own fees.
Should I use Shopify Payments or a third-party gateway?
Shopify Payments, almost always. Using a third-party gateway adds 0.6% to 2% to every sale as an extra Shopify fee, on top of whatever your gateway (PayPal, Stripe, etc.) already charges. The only reason to skip Shopify Payments is if it is not available in your country.
When should I upgrade from Basic to Grow or Advanced?
A rough rule: stay on Basic until you hit ~$25,000/month in revenue, upgrade to Grow between ~$25,000 and ~$120,000/month, and upgrade to Advanced above ~$120,000/month. At those crossover points, the lower processing fees on the higher plan outweigh the higher subscription cost.
Does this calculator include the Plus plan?
No. Shopify Plus starts around $2,300/month with custom processing rates and is only relevant to enterprise merchants. If you are on Plus, your pricing is negotiated directly with Shopify.
